Maersk to relocate head China office to Beijing

DENMARK's Maersk Group has announced plans to relocate the office of the chairman of its China office and North Asia group representative from Hong Kong to Beijing from July 1, a move that reflects the growing importance of Mainland China to the group and its "confidence in the future potential of activities" there.

Tim Smith will relinquish his current position as North Asia regional chief executive for the shipping line to focus on the roles of chairman of Maersk China Ltd and chief representative of the shipping group in North Asia, a company statement said.

Commenting on the move, Mr Smith said: "Mainland China is by far the largest cargo origin for our transportation related activities. In addition, we have considerable investments and a large procurement programme in China.

"With China's economy being in transition, we need to be close to stakeholders in business and government to ensure that we identify opportunities and evolve in step with the needs and expectations of our customers. Moving the chairman function to Beijing will allow us to pay even closer attention to these opportunities."

He said that his new roles as chairman and regional group representative will enable him to provide greater support for the group's activities in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which are "significant and important markets in their own right."

Mr Smith has worked in the container shipping industry for 30 years, with much of that spent time in Asia. Initially with P&O Containers and then P&O Nedlloyd, he has been with Maersk Line since its acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd in 2005.
