AAT installs X-ray machine amid global air cargo security fears

ASIA Airfreight Terminal (AAT) at Hong Kong International Airport has installed a new Smiths Detection X-ray machine in Terminal 2 to boost the reliability of security screening.

This was done to meet the security requirements set by the Hong Kong Aviation Security Programme and the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), to identify weapons, explosives and narcotics in air cargo shipments.

This tool assists the X-ray machine operator by localising suspicious "zones" in an object. The operator will then be alerted to conduct further inspection by an alarm and the conveyor belt will be automatically stopped.

Through the use of the new X-ray machine the overall process of export cargo checking has been streamlined to achieve higher operational efficiency and time-saving benefits, a company statement said.

It also enhances the security level for cargo acceptance as the automatic detection function fastens and improves the quality of recognition compared to earlier systems in use.

General manager Khaw Hock Eng said: "This new X-ray machine together with our highly reliable cargo operation services is important in response t the increasing global security concern and air logistics needs."
